Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania by Agnė
What is it like to live in Vilnius? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city is flat, green, quiet and safe to live. Yes, I would definitely recommend it for studies.
How much does it cost to live in Vilnius?
It is not very expensive comparing to Western Europe or Scandinavian countries. Studio flat rent varies from 100 to 300 euros per month. However, utilities costs depend on the type of the house you live in. Heating costs varies from 50 to 100 euros in the coldest month of winter. City transportation costs for a students 6 euros per month.
However, if you live in student accommodation these costs will be much lower. 100 euros are enough for food (Unless you buy lots of alcohol or cigarettes). Speaking of cigarettes they are much cheaper then in western Europe.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vilnius? Is there any advice you can give?
No it isn't. There are always plenty offers. I would advise to use www.aruodas.lt website which is the most reliable. The lowest rent princes are in winter. So if you intend to rent a flat and the prices are important , I would advise to choose erasmus studies in spring semester which starts on the first of February.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Well I am not very fond of national food as I am vegetarian.
Anyway I would recommend to try potatoes dumplings. Unless you are muslim, as it usually contains pork. Other dish you have to try potato pancakes and potato pie. These two are really good.
What places would you recommend visiting in Vilnius?
Sightseeing: definitely the old town, Gediminas castle, St.Ann's church, St. Peter's and Paul's church, Trakai castle (50 km away from Vilnius)
For shopping and entertainment: Akropolis (mall, cinema, bowling, and skating rinks) and Ozas (cinema, restaurants, mall).
Others malls are Europa, Gedimino 9, Panorama.
Is it good to eat out in Vilnius? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
For those who love pizza I would recommend Chili pizza (chain of pizzerias), international food Le Crepe (located in the centre of Vilnius), for national food Forto dvaras (chain of restaurants) or Katpedele (chain of restaurants).
For cake and coffee lover I would recommend Pilies kepyklele which is located in the heart of the old town (Pilies str.)
Is the nightlife good in Vilnius? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is active only during weekends. Even in summer restaurants and cafeterias are closed at 11-12 pm.
Nightclubs: Taranino, Coffeinn, Skybar (very good cocktails, but very expensive) Poshclub, Latino pub.
What advice would you give future students heading to Vilnius?
I would advise to take warm clothes :) as temperatures in winter may fall by -27 :)
