Erasmus Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania by Zsuzsa
Why did you choose to go to Vilnius, Lithuania?
I chose Lithuania because I wanted to experience the northern culture, and to discover the three baltic states nobody heard about in my country.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship was 6 months long, includin a language course in Klaipeda. I received 400 euros per month. I really advice new students to do also the language course before strating Erasmus studies, because in Lithuania people are not really speaking English, just Russian and Lithuanian, so it might be very helpful to be able to say few words.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vilnius?
Mykolo Romerio University is a modern university, with great facilities. The dormitories are very close to the university ( about 2 min walk) but the conditions there are a bit low. However Vilnius is a vibrant city, with possibilities to experience Lithuanian culture, great parties, and great sights.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Vilnius to other students?
Yes, it is definitely a one time experience in life.
What is the food like?
I personally don't like Lithuanian food so much, but of course it's worthy to taste it at least once. Though I think it is very fatty. But don't be afraid of the food, in Vilnius you can find your own country's restaurants, like French, Italian, German etc.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Vilnius?
No, the university found it for me. You can chose between living in the dorms or renting an apartment. I recommend living in the dorms because even though the conditions are very low, you will meet great people, have nice events, and it's cheap.
How much does it cost to live in Vilnius?
Taking in consideration the parties, the food, the trips and other expenses I think with 400 euros you can live good life in Vilnius.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes, you can attend language courses, which I recommend you to do. It will help you a lot at the shops and on the streets since people are speaking mostly Russian and Lithuanian. You can attend the EILC language course before you start your semester, but you can also attend language lecture in university.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Vilnius from your city?
If you are not from Poland, Latvia or Russia, the easiest and cheapest way to travel to Vilnius is by plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Vilnius?
Salento (where are the Erasmus parties), Cocain, Posh, Secret etc.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Vilnius is part of World heritage, so I recommend you to just walk around there and discover the little streets and buildings by walk. Do not forget Literatu gatve, and of course the pedetrian streets. I recommend a trip also to Trakai, Siaulai, Klaipeda, Palanga or Nida. Most probably your university will organize trips for you.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Vilnius in the future?
This is the greatest chance for you to travel to Northern countries, meet great people and have fun for a semester. Do not miss any trips, save money to be able to go to Russia, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, and Riga. It's worth it. Have fun!
