Erasmus Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania, by Martín
Why did you choose to go to Vilnius, Lithuania?
Lithuania and all Baltic countries were for me unexplored land, so I gave myself the chance to see culture and places here. To he be honest, I was very surprised and have to say I like Lithuania and Vilnius very very much.
I was on Erasmus in Vilnius for one semester, but since I liked this city and its lifestyle so much, I decided to extend my studies here, so now I'm here for another semester.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I have managed to extend my scholarship for 2 semesters and I got 350 euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vilnius?
Depends on personality of each one, but I think everyone can find their own. From parties in clubs through cinemas, museums also art galleries, but for sure Erasmus in Vilnius is about travelling.
In half a year, I went to a lot of countries: Russia, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Estonia... In short, there are many opportunities to travel cheap here, in comparison with other places where is harder to go to other parts of Europe.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Vilnius to other students?
For sure, yes!
What is the food like?
Food is tasty. They usually eat potatoes and use dill and there is a lot of traditional dishes.
How much does it cost to live in Vilnius?
It depends on the priorities of each individual. You can find a flat with a sauna for 350 euro, but also a room for 150 euro.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are language courses which are useful. Besides, it is not hard to learn main phrases and and understand what they say a bit, but to speak and have normal conversation in Lituania is very difficult, since there is a lot of grammar differences.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Vilnius from your city?
On the one hand, the easiest way for sure by plane from Vienna, but price is about 150 euros.
On the other hand, the cheapest way is by bus from Poland or Prague. It takes time but the price is about 20-30 euros.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Vilnius?
For Erasmus parties, I recommend clubs like Salento or Cocaine. I'm not a disco person, but, luckily, there are also alternatives for those like me, such as the Liverpool pub, an indie rock music pub which is very cozy.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Vilnius?
There is a lot of good places; it depends on what you would like to eat. If you want strong>traditional food, then I recommend goin go to Šnekutis; if you prefer homemade burgers, then go to Drama Burger. Besides, in the city centre, there are other places with great food and very good sushi restaurants. If you need more recommendations, you can find them on Tripadvisor or similar websites.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
I mainly recommend going to the city centre, as it has many historical areas. Besides, I recommend going to Uzupis. If want to know more, you could also find more places to go on Tripadvisor or just Google.
