Erasmus Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania by Demet
Why did you choose to go to Vilnius, Lithuania?
I chose Vilnius because Lithuania was a country I knew absolutely nothing about. I was sure it would be a more interesting choice rather than western Europe countries because I had already seen most of them, so Lithuania was gonna be very different and new. Another reason was the financial opportunities (I mean it's a cheap country).
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I applied for two semesters, for now I have 1500€ for one semester. So about 300€ per month. I can say it is enough to live here nicely if you don't count extras like the trips you wanna make around the country.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vilnius?
It is very fun. Especially if you are staying at a dorm, you are always with international students and there is always some events at local bars and clubs. So it's pretty social.
What is the food like?
The food includes a lot of potatoes. I cannot say they have a rich cuisine. There are a few traditional dishes that you can try and then you wanna try something new. I can recommend potato pancakes and cepelinai (big potato dumplings with meat), also the cold beet soup.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Vilnius?
My university offered dormitory during the application period so it did not cost me.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is a bit difficult but you start to catch up with words after some time. In Mykolas Romeris Uni they offer Basic Lithuanian courses.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Vilnius from your city?
A lot of people fly to Riga first and then take a bus to Vilnius because sometimes the planes are cheaper to Riga. But mainly you can find direct affordable flights to Vilnius almost always.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Vilnius?
Forto Dvaras in Pilies street for Lithuanian food. Cafe Montmartre for some delicious French food.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The cathedral square, Gediminas castle, all the museums. It's a very good idea to spend one day in Trakai (half an hour to Vilnius by bus).
