Erasmus Experience in Vilnius, Lithuania by Ania
Why did you choose to go to Vilnius, Lithuania?
It is close to Poland. I didn't want to go too far away.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I went for a whole academic year and my home university gave me 1100 euros per each semester.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vilnius?
It is really nice, there is a lot of discounts for students in the city, especially downtown. Living in a dorm is also quite cheap; Sauletekio 39 is a great dorm for those students, who love party lifestyle, Olandu dorm is much more quiet.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Vilnius to other students?
Yes, but there is one thing - it is extremely cold in winter, so if you want to go to Vilnius, take a looot of warm clothes with you!
What is the food like?
It is kinda greasy. Lithuanians use a lot of sour cream, they put it everywhere. As well as garlic!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Vilnius?
Yes. I lived in a dorm, but I don't remember how much I paid, something like 250-300 litas I think.
How much does it cost to live in Vilnius?
It depends on a lifestyle, of course. But 800-900 litas per month should be enough.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Lithuanian language is really hard, but it is useful, when you decide to travel around Lithuania. Actually even when you simply go to a nearest shop, Lithuanian is useful. People do not really speak English, so basic Lithuanian (or Russian) would be helpful. Vilnius University offers a languague course for foreign students, so that's cool.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Vilnius from your city?
Simple Express bus. It goes directly from Warsaw to Vilnius and it's cheap.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Vilnius?
Salento Pub is the center of Erasmus students' night life, especially on Tuesdays' nights.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Vilnius?
There is a cheap kafeteria in the Academy of Arts.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
National Opera has a huuuge discounts for students.
It's worth to see The Hill of Crosses (Šiauliai), as well as to go to Palanga, Nida and Klaipėda (near the Baltic See).
