My Erasmus Experience in Vienna, Austria - by Adrián

Why did you choose to go to Vienna, Austria?

Because it’s a city full of beautiful buildings and gardens, and it’s in a country where they speak German.

How long did your scholarship last? How much were you paid?

10 months, and I was paid 2, 000 euros in total.

What’s the student life like in Vienna?

Very good. Since Vienna’s located in the centre of Europe, there are students from all over the world there. You get to know loads of interesting people from all different cultures, and everyone is really open and nice there, too.

Would you recommend the city and University of Vienna to other students?

Yes, I would recommend the city. The Wirtschaftsuniversität, where I studied, is great too, but I don’t know anyone who spoke badly of the other universities there either.

What’s the food like in Austria?

Great, especially the sweets and desserts.

Did you find it hard to find somewhere to live in Vienna?

No, since there are various student halls of residences, webpages to help you find a flat to rent, and Facebooks groups you can use. It’s easy to find accommodation here.

How expensive is living in Vienna?

Around 600 euros a month minimum.

How are you finding the language? Have you signed up to a language course at the university?

Good. I went to an intensive German course when I arrived, and took a semester course in German.

People here do speak English, although not everyone does, and if you want to practise your German in everyday situations (e. g. at the supermarket, in bars, cafes…) attending a course is a good idea.

What’s the cheapest way of getting to Vienna from your home city?

The best way is by plane, though it’s by no means the cheapest.

What are the best places for partying in Vienna?

Rideclub, Travel Shack, Lutz, The Box, and Saulenhalle.

What about eating out in Vienna? What are your favourite places?

Vapiano (Moulin Rouge), Centimeter, and Schnitzelwirt 52.

What does Vienna have to offer in terms of culture?

The opera (tickets are four euros), the palaces and the Ring.
