What is it like to live in Vienna? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

As someone once put it, "A city that charms and seduces from scratch, but even more the longer you stay''. Vienna is an extremely diverse, comfortable, rich but quite city that can please almost everyone (not the beach lovers like me though, anyway). I would definitely recommend it, specially to live in the long run. Still, even after a couple of months I continued to find myself walking around like a proud smiling tourist. It will have that effect on you. And while I stayed there, several friends of mine have visited me (the city to be honest, but that's OK) never to be disappointed.

Life in Vienna won't be fast like in Paris or London. You won't go crazy and you will have time for yourself. But everything runs smoothly so you don't have to rush. If you simply walk around you'll nonetheless be rewarded. However, while I love Innerstadt, I've always felt that the more I moved away from the centre the more rewarded I was. This is in frank contrast with most other European cities. Places like Klosterneuburg and Grinzing are never visited by tourists, which is a shame. In Vienna, people really value time for leisure, which creates an outstandingly good environment in the city. Still, working and studying in Vienna can be far more productive than in many other cities. In summary, Vienna is an amazing city that somehow managed to avoid the main problems that all big cities face.

What is the student lifestyle like in Vienna?

There are many students in Vienna, which makes the city socially very rich, interesting and dynamic. The education is very good, even though you never really feel much pressure. Still, your time can easily be wisely spent and the good/rich environment will be congruous for you to make the most out of your stay in Vienna.

How much does it cost to live in Vienna?

The life cost in Vienna, when it comes to fixed expenses, is much lower than outsiders usually imagine. For the normally limited student budgets, this is really important. Going out can become expensive very fast, but it is also very common for people to go out together and enjoy a couple of drinks at the parks or by the river, which is much more affordable but even more pleasant.

I would say accommodation can be easily arranged by about 450€.

Transportation can be guaranteed with the annual pass of 365 € (1€ per day! ). I should point out that the quality is superb and that everything is always exactly on time. As for food-products and other expenses, I would say they are cheaper than in Western European countries. It should also be mentioned that there is ample financial support for students, which is limited and most other European countries.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vienna? Is there any advice you can give?

No. Vienna primes in providing accessible accommodation to everyone. It is also very flexible to move in and out. I would say if your receiving institution can provide accommodation, go for it in the beginning. Once you have an established group of friends you may consider moving together to an apartment. Either way, you will be satisfied.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Tends to be fatty and heavy. For the main dishes, you will repeatedly stumble upon Goulashes and Schnitzels. Perhaps also the sausages, although not at the restaurants. These are fine. Given Vienna's geographic position, you will also find much offer from Eastern European countries (e. g. Serbian, Bosnian). You will find yourself questioning and discussing the true geographic origin of many dishes, with several neighboring countries claiming it. But in Vienna, I would have to go with the pastries, like Sachertorte, Kardinalschnitte or Strudels. They will hunt you everywhere you go and you won't be able to resist.

What places would you recommend visiting in Vienna?

There are too many museums, art galleries, and historical buildings to name here.

  • Personally, I would say simply walk around and explore Vienna Innerstadt. Lose yourself there and you I'll have a great time. Again and again.
  • The Schönbrunn Palace. You have to go there during all different seasons and see how beautifully it changes. You will always enjoy it.
  • When it gets hot, go to Alte Donau. Amazing park with clear waters and many outdoor activities. You can easily spend the weekend there.
  • Then, explore the outskirts. Most people never get to do it and so they are losing so much. Again, try places like Klosterneuberg and Grinzing.

Is it good to eat out in Vienna? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Definitely. I would go with anywhere with a table outside in Innerstadt.

Is the nightlife good in Vienna? Where is good to go?

There are so many different thingss that you'll have to find what best suits you. However, in Vienna you have everything. From pubs and clubs, to live jazz and blues, to classical music and the (what Vienna is most famous for) the Balls.

What advice would you give future students heading to Vienna?

Extend your stay as much as possible.
