Experience in Vienna, Austria by Eva
What is it like to live in Vienna? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Vienna is a mixture of modern life and glimpses into the past. It offers about everything a student would want during the "time of their life". So I would definitely recommend it to students.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vienna?
It depends on the courses you take but most students don't focus only on studying and getting their degree but also on their social life. Most of them won't say no to a beer in the evening.
How much does it cost to live in Vienna?
Living in Vienna isn't cheap. Rent is at least 300€ a month, 100-150€ for food + internet, public transport etc.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vienna? Is there any advice you can give?
There are student accommodations all over the city that are not too expensive. And if you don't mind travelling to university for half an hour every day you could get a placement in one of the outer districts fairly easy.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
You can find almost any type of food in Vienna. The local food like Wiener Schnitzel, Schweinsbraten etc are delicious but probably not the right thing for vegetarians. And anyone visiting Vienna should try the local wine.
What places would you recommend visiting in Vienna?
Schönbrunn (the palace, the palace gardens and the zoo), Museumsquartier, the Twin Museums, Danube Island, the Old Danube, the Kahlenberg, the Mariahilferstraße... You definitely won't get bored.
Is it good to eat out in Vienna? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There is something for every taste and every wallet. I would definitely recommend visiting a Heurigen (there are some outside of Vienna which can be reached with public transport and a short hike). A very famous but expensive place is the Plachutta, but the food is worth the price.
Is the nightlife good in Vienna? Where is good to go?
Around the Schwedenplatz there are many locations, quite popular amongst students. And the student associations of every university host all sorts of festivities. Just keep your eyes open.
What advice would you give future students heading to Vienna?
Be open minded and enjoy your time in the beautiful city of Vienna! And don't mind the complaining of Viennese people, that's how they are.
