Erasmus Experience in Vienna, Austria by Sanne
Why did you choose to go to Vienna, Austria?
Because of the history, the style, the central location and the University.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I got a 4, 5 month scholarship (Erasmus+ grant) and I think it's 270 euros per month. So around 1200 euros in total.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vienna?
There are a lot of students and places to go for students, especially for international students, however it is a really big city so it's not a typical student town.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Vienna to other students?
Yes I would definetely recommend the city! There's just so much to do and see and it's really beautiful and nice to live. The University is ok. The courses and teachers are good but the organisation of the University is just bad. Trying to figure out my courses was really hard and also things like printing or going to the library is an obstacle with which they don't really help you.
What is the food like?
The food is good if you like meat and potatoes! But there are a lot of international (especially a lot of italian places) as well in the city; so a lot to choose!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Vienna?
Start soon with finding accommodation; it's a bit hard to find something, but luckily there are a lot of companies who can help you!
How much does it cost to live in Vienna?
I pay 430 euros for my room and I think groceries are a bit expensive, especially vegetables. But going out to eat is quite cheap though! However you will spend a lot money on going on trips and going out.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I thought yes; but I'm Dutch and German and Dutch is quite similar. Also I had already 5 years of German in High School, so yeah. I heard from italian, spanish, french, english people that it was a lot harder for them. There are language courses available at the Language Centre. You do have to pay for that, but you get a lot of discount! Definetely worth it. You can do a course in the month before the semester starts (a really good way to start your semester! ) and there are also courses during the semester.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Vienna from your city?
By plane!
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Vienna?
There are a lot of nice pubs and bars in the 7th and 8th district. Also a lot of good clubs near the Ring. For meeting other erasmus students: Travelshack.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Vienna?
Hmmm... "Figlmüller" for the original schnitzel, "La mia" for really good italian food and "Le burger" for the best burger ever.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
A lot! Schönbrunn, the castle Belvedere, Museumsquartier, Hundertwasserhaus...
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Vienna in the future?
Save some money and enjoy the perfect location in the middle of Europe to make some trips! And learn German; they really like it if you just speak german.
