Erasmus Experience in Vienna, Austria by Massih
Why did you choose to go to Viena, Austria?
The Technical University of Vienna was well known in Australia and would have given me an opportunity to continue my line of work in my major.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I didn't receive any money.
What is the student lifestyle like in Viena?
Honestly it's quite expensive, however there are many opportunities to live with other flatmates in the city to split the costs.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Viena to other students?
The City itself is peaceful, beautiful and quite pleasant. The university itself can be quite a challenge, but i would say it depends on each individual and their major they wish to do.
What is the food like?
Fortunately there are various exotic foods to pick from unique locations and restaurants, so it's quite multicultural.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Viena?
Since living here in Vienna is quite cheaper than living expenses in Sydney, i would say it was worth coming here. i didn't pay much since my family helped.
How much does it cost to live in Viena?
I would say an estimate of 500-700€ would be required with the current rent and living expenses.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I wouldn't say it was easy to learn German, but i doubt learning a foreign language anywhere is easy to begin with, it just needs practice and enthusiasm. there are quite a few, however the prices were a bit too steep for me so i chose a VHS course.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Viena from your city?
By plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Viena?
Each to their own. i prefer movie nights in Mariahilfe or well known Irish pubs in the city centre.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The city centre in the 1st district is a must see.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Viena in the future?
I would recommend learning the language or taking a German course 1 or half a year in advance so you can come prepared. Also to pack warm clothing since the colder seasons here can be quite chilly.
