Why did you choose to go to Vienna, Austria?

The reputation of the University of Vienna and all of the positive things I have heard about Vienna from other people who have visited.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

one semester. I recieved just over 1000euro.

What is the student lifestyle like in Vienna?

It is quite good, I like OeAD guesthouses, it's great to be able to meet other international students.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Vienna to other students?

I would highly recommend. My experience here has been amazing

What is the food like?

There are some lovely restaurants and a great selection.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Vienna?

No not really, I applied for accommodation with the OeAD and the process was very simple.

How much does it cost to live in Vienna?

it's a little bit expensive depending on your needs. but you can get around these costs, ie nightclubs might be free before 11 etc but sometimes buying a drink out can be really expensive. With regard to groceries there isn't much of a difference compared to at home

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

I have noticed an improvement in my German but it was extremely difficult at the beginning to get used to the Austrian dialect. I now understand it better and my vocabulary/grammar has improved without a doubt. There are a wide variety of language courses available in different institutions across the city, they are very accommodating to foreign students.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Vienna from your city?

As I am from Ireland the only or most logical option is to fly. I fly with Aer Lingus the Irish Airling and their fares are very reasonable.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Vienna?

Praterdome, The Loft are good but by far my favourite is Charlie P's and all of the bars in Schwedenplatz

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Vienna?

Ruffino on Josefstädtter Strasse is very nice and TGI Fridays isn't exclusive to Vienna but is always a winner. Augustiner Keller near the Albertina Museum is very nice for a typical Viennese dining experience.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The list is endless for Vienna, I could spend all day listing them.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Vienna in the future?

Beware of all the hidden fees everywhere. I have had very few bad experiences here but there seems to be outrageous fees for everything here. For example, one time I accidentally left my key in my room to go downstairs to take my washing out and I was charged 120 euro to be let back into my room. Also there is a 200 euro for losing your key if you chose to stay in one of the OeAD guesthouses. The Austrian students union fee is also very important because you will not be able to fully enroll without paying it. Beside from these things though I can't really fault Vienna, it's an amazing place.
