Valencia, the city of the Turia river
Tonight I'm going to talk about my dear city, Valencia, that's why I will do it in English, to help the foreigners to better understand.
Valencia is a city in the East coast of Spain, therefore it faces the Mediterranean Sea. The old Turia riverbed cross all the city from the top until the bottom (the beach and the port). The architecture in the center of the city is modernist: the Central Market or the North Station are the best examples of it. Moreover, you have many buildings that the Muslims built for us, as the Lonja.
The old town is located in the Carmen neighborhood, mostly. Narrow streets go up and down into this part of the city that looks like a little town inside the old two towers, standing still, taking a look toward the new part of the city.
These two towers are called Torres de Serranos y Torres de Quart, and they were the gates of the city during some centuries. The Torres de Quart have some holes that the French Legion made between 1808 and 1814, in the Independence War.
If we talk about culture, valencian people are very friendly, at least, that's what I think being valencian. The culture is in the street: we love to take a coffee with friends, or go for a walk, practice some sports on the riverbed or visit parks and go to the cinema. The idea is to be out with someone.
Food is awesome. Our typical dish is the paella, but you can taste whatever you want of all the food we called: Mediterranean food (comida mediterránea). Salad, rice, fresh fish are the most well-known gastronomy.
One of my favorite places to visit is the Plaza de la Virgen, where you can find the Basilica of the Virgin. If you move down street, you will find the Plaza de la Reina where you can visit the Cathedral.
The other part of the city that you have to visit is the City of Arts and Sciences. The architecture is completely new and modern. The buildings are all white and inside you can visit a museum, the opera, the aquarium, a 3D cinema and walk around the beautiful area. Personally, I disagree with these constructions because they costed more money to the city than the revenues they're providing.
Anyway, they are mandatory to visit.
And If Valencia is characteristic because of something it is because it has a beach and the port. As this part welcomed the 32nd and 33rd America's Cup and the Europe's Worldship of Formula 1 it was reformed. You can also see the Veles e Vents building and go for a walk along the beach over the large promenade.
