Lea’s Experience in Valencia, Spain

Why did you choose to go to Valencia, Spain?

Because it was the only place that offered the master’s course that I study.

How long was your scholarship? How much financial support did you receive?

My scholarship lasted the length of the master’s course. Approximately, two years. I still haven’t received the grant and I don’t know how much it will be.

What’s the student lifestyle like in Valencia?

Valencia is a city with a big student atmosphere. There is even a neighbourhood, Benimaclet, which is where most of the student accommodation is. The only thing it lacks is more student associations.

Would you recommend the city and the university to other students?

Yes, I would recommend them. It’s a really cool experience. It is a Mediterranean city. There is a beach and there is also good transport.

What’s the country’s food like?

Fantastic like in all of Spain.

Was it difficult for you to find accommodation?

No, it is easy. There are lots of options: shared flats, host families, student accommodation etc…

How much does it cost to live in Valencia?

Well, it depends on how you like to live. If you eat a lot of pasta, you can live perfectly easily with €200 (rent and food). There are obviously more expensive ways to live too.

How’s the language? Did you go on a course at the university?

In my case, I speak Spanish already because I’m native to Spain.

What’s the cheapest way for you to get to Valencia from your hometown?

Bus.

What about eating out in Valencia? What are your favourite places?

The places that are off the beaten track and aren’t close to the centre. They are cheaper and offer more typical Spanish food.

What about sightseeing?

The City of Arts and Sciences, the Carmen neighbourhood, La Llotja, the fishing village of Cabañal, the beach etc.

Do you have any advice for future students in Valencia?

Before you rent a room, I would recommend staying in temporary accommodation when you first get there so that you can go and look around possible flats. Also then you can get to know the area better as well as the transport etc.
