Erasmus Experience in Valencia, Spain by Maggie
Why did you choose to go to Valencia, Spain?
Valencia is warm all year-round, right on the beach, and there is always a party going on. The clubs are huge with great music and tons of people. Everyone is really friendly and it is easy to meet new people.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was in Spain for 12 months and I am going back to Valencia again this summer for 4 months. I did not receive any scholarship money or any money to help with my living expenses because I am an America student.
What is the student lifestyle like in Valencia?
Classes are relatively easy and very fun. Every night of the week there is an event going on and weeks are big parties. In the summer, the beaches are packed with students playing volleyball and swimming.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Valencia to other students?
I would recommend anyone to come to Valencia, it has something to offer all students.
What is the food like?
The food is really good and very affordable. Bottles of wine are only one euro at the store and other alcohol is inexpensive too. Restaurants usually have meals for 5-10 euros, more expensive places being 15-20 euros a person.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Valencia?
No, I was able to find housing online through friends and Facebook.
How much does it cost to live in Valencia?
Rent was around 200 euros a month plus around 40 a month for utilities. Also budget between 100-200 euros for food and parties.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I did not take languages classes.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Valencia from your city?
Valencia has a large airport that is only a 10 minute metro ride to the center of the city. You can find cheap flights all over Europe.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Valencia?
Mya is a huge night club at the City of Arts and Sciences, it is very popular and you can get in for free if you get there early. Also make sure to check out the clubs on the beach, including Las Animas. The beach clubs are great for the summer because they have outdoor areas and they don't close till sun rise, so you can run out to the beach as the sun comes up.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Valencia?
All the restaurants in the city center are really good, but look for some unique places and try the specials- always a good surprise. Don't leave Valencia without trying the Paella Valenciana.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
City of Arts and Sciences. Torres de Serranos. BioPark. Cathedral in Plaza de Virgin.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Valencia in the future?
Be open minded, go meet locals and attend language exchanges.
