Erasmus Experience in Valencia, Spain by Felix
Why did you choose to go to Valencia, Spain?
Because of the weather. Coming from northern Germany, it was wonderful to wear t shirts until december.
What is the student lifestyle like in Valencia?
Pretty standard in comparison. As an erasmus student you will probably don't find it too hard to follow classes.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Valencia to other students?
Absolutely. The city is beautiful and offers everything you can wish for.
What is the food like?
It's okay for me and great of you like seafood. Go to one of the big markets to get it as fresh as possible. Vegans may struggle a little bit but check out Lidl if you are looking for vegan groceries.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Valencia?
Not at all nur the rent can be very high in comparison, so check various offers.
How much does it cost to live in Valencia?
Pretty much european standard. Cheaper than Scandinavia but more expensive than Poland for example.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
If your spanish isn't fluid, get in touch with a tandem partner. Best way to learn the language. If your spanish is fluid, learn valencian. Because some people actually only speak this regional language, but that's rare. Keep in mind, that english is not as common as in other european countries!
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Valencia from your city?
The plane. Like it or not but that ist still the superior way of traveling inside europe. There may be international bus and trainlines but they take forever.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Valencia?
As a german I love techno and Valencia offers a few events or Clubs for that, I can recommend The Oven and Palau Electronica. But clubbing in Spain seems to be more about "See and be seen" than actual dancing. So show up fancy, no track pants in the club! :(
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Take a walk through the old town (Ciudad Vella, El Carmen) and stroll through the beautiful small alleys and sideways. Best way to get lost is with a camera and good company.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Valencia in the future?
Learn the language and get in touch with the locals. Might seem scary at first but the Valencian are very friendly and the woman are the most beautiful on earth (probably).
