Erasmus Experience in Valencia, Spain by Ebru
Why did you choose to go to Valencia, Spain?
I love Spanish, and I wanted to go to a country with a nice weather. I like to live in cities with a coast and Valencia is always full of foreigners and other Erasmus students like you. And I knew, in Spain there were lots of festivals and parties going on all the time. Before going there, these were my primary reasons, then I got there and I found so much more reasons, I could stay in the city forever!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I've been there for 5 months. The grant that the school gave me made up just for the rent and the bills, unfortunately. You have to have other funds to live there.
What is the student lifestyle like in Valencia?
Study all day, party all night!
No, no, it depends on the person, actually. If you want to pass the courses, you should spend time at the university as well as completing your homeworks and doing well on the exams. Luckily you can both party and study as long as you do both on time.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Valencia to other students?
I definitely would! Valencia is a great city, and University of Valencia was full of respectable professors. The education system and the approach to the students were really good.
What is the food like?
It was different than my country's, of course. I had a hard time getting used to the food, since I don't like seafood at all, but don't worry, you can find anything you have in your country.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Valencia?
No, it didn't. I contacted some people on Facebook to find a room, if you reassure each other, you don't always have to pay.
How much does it cost to live in Valencia?
So, for a month: 200 euros for rent and Internet, 50-60 euros for the bills, and 300 euros to spend on food and accommodation (if you live very carefully, of course! ) will be enough. Don't forget though: the more, the merrier!
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
You could learn Valenciano for free, there was this course of a University Student Club or something like that. And for a really very fair price, you can start learning Spanish too, they teach courses on each level of Spanish and the place where they teach you was really close to the university.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Valencia from your city?
Unfortunately, it was expensive either way. I travelled there by plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Valencia?
Bolseria of course!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Valencia?
100 Montaditos is my favourite! Also the Turkish restaurant "Sofra" was my personal choice since I love Turkish Food.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Valencia in the future?
The weather is unstable, so bring all kinds of clothes with you!
And to me, it was expensive to live there, so try to calculate your budget carefully before you arrive!
