Erasmus Experience in Valencia, Spain by Anna
Why did you choose to go to Valencia, Spain?
I wanted to learn Spanish and go somewhere not very far away but far enough to have a new experience and of course Spanish south climate was a strong argument too!
But especially I have always been attracted by Spanish culture and language. I prefered Valencia than Madrid or Barcelona, because I wanted a bit smaller city without traffic jams etc. And without spending hours in public transport. It was a great choice and I wouldn't change it!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship lasted 5 months. As for Belgium conditions I have received quite a lot - more than 250 euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Valencia?
Student lifestyle in Valencia is very dynamic and there are a lot activities and parties that you can do there! You decide I you want to hang out more with erasmus people or with Spanish people - or with both! There are many cultural activities too and festivals, the biggest and the best one - las Fallas.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Valencia to other students?
Of course! It was one of the best experiences in my life.
What is the food like?
Food is very good, timetable changes a lot so it is easy to put on weight. Also because you use so much 'aceite'! But it is delicious. Especially good paella, tapas, pichos and vino.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Valencia?
No, it cost me nothing, just some time spend on Internet.
How much does it cost to live in Valencia?
You can find quite a nice flat for students by max 250 euro charges included, then you should count at least 100 euros per month for living costs but I guess everybody are spending more, to enjoy better their Erasmus.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It is much easier if you hang out with Spanish guys too, what a lot of Erasmus don't do! There are Spanish courses in El centro de idiomas which I attended and I made quite a big progress.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Valencia from your city?
I had a good connection - direct flight with Ryanair.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Valencia?
To the city center, to Carmen, but one night is not enough to feel all Valencian atmopshere.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Valencia?
Great pinchos in "Tanto Monta", cheap tapas in "Montaditos' and less known Spanish restaurants - I do not recommend to go to restaurants for tourists in the city center.
What good cultural cites are there to visit?
Alicante, Javea, Guadalest...
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Valencia in the future?
Just to enjoy it as much as they can and make an effort at the beginning to meet new people but not just Erasmus. Spanish people make you discover Spanish culture and language so much more and this gives a real taste of Erasmus experience in Spain.
