Erasmus Experience in Valencia, Spain

Why did you choose to go to Valencia, Spain?

One of the reasons was for the languages, but also because of the Polytechnic University of Valencia. This university is considered one of the best in Europe for what I study in terms of the teaching. I had also heard that Valencia was a really great city to live in and a very popular destination among Erasmus students.

How long was your scholarship? How much financial support did you receive?

My scholarship was for 5 months and I received 1 000 euros a month.

What’s the student lifestyle like in Valencia?

There are lots of students in Valencia from all over Europe and there are also a lot from Latin America. This international climate also allows you to learn more about the world. You spend time with people from all over the globe, putting you in a globalised environment, and at the same time, it is those interactions that show you a series of surprises about the customs of others. This, in turn, allows you to learn and explore other cultures and experience them yourself. These intercultural encounters give you the opportunity to learn about the ways of life of others, and you can also share your own world with others, without feeling strange, nor inferior or superior than the others, just unique.

Would you recommend the city and the university to other students?

Valencia is an excellent city for your Erasmus year. It has a great climate, you can go to the beach practically all year round and there are lots of places to go at the weekend and to spend time with friends. The Polytechnic University of Valencia has great infrastructure, which provides its students with all the facilities necessary for their studies, as well as sports facilities and other recreational facilities.

What’s the country’s food like?

The food is very varied, from different varieties of meat, seafood, different kinds of pasta, and all types of fruit and vegetables, so no one should have any difficulty finding something they like.

How did you find accommodation?

I found it through the university’s web page where there was a link with offers of flats to rent and I found a great offer on there. You can also walk around the areas near the university and find lots of notices on walls and lampposts about flats to rent, so it’s not difficult to find something.

What are rent prices like? And the prices in general too?

You can find a room for between €160 and €230 per month. The price varies a bit depending on the location compared to the university or the services that the flat has. I think the prices are pretty good compared to other cities.

How’s the language? Did you go on a course at the university?

In my case, I’m Argentinian, so I didn’t have any problems with the language.

What’s the cheapest way for you to get to Valencia from your hometown?

I come from Argentina, but Valencia is very well connected to the whole of Europe.

Which places do you recommend for nightlife in Valencia?

The best places are in the Plaza del Carmen area or the places near to the universities like Blasco Ibanez Avenue (Avenida de Blasco Ibanez).

What about eating out in Valencia? What are your favourite places?

The truth is, there is a wide variety of places to go out for tapas or to have a beer. And every place has its own style.

What about sightseeing?

One place that you can’t afford to miss is the City of Arts and Sciences. You can also take a walk through the old town or down the Turia River. These are must-sees when you’re in Valencia.
