Erasmus Experience in Valencia, Spain

Why did you choose to go to Valencia, Spain?

Valencia was my chosen destination mostly because of the "professional experience" criteria, since there they have new models of Hospital Management (which is my professional area). However, the beauty of the city, the charm and the innovation which has inspired the architecture of the city were also very important and contributed to my choice.

How long does the grant last? How much money do you get for help?

The total grant was €1199 for 3 months. Don't forget that my Erasmus experience was an internship and not academic (it was only a complement of my Undergraduate degree).

What's the student environment like in Valencia?

Quite lively but very collaborative. The universities in Valencia have good atmospheres, good conditions and are easily accessible by public transport. The city inspires you to get good results during your Erasmus exchange!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Valencia to other students?

Yes, although I don't know the university part very well, from living with students at the university it's clear that there is a good academic scene for those living there. Regarding internships I can tell you that they are demanding but that only makes you more valuable in the future!

How's the country's food?

Good, for those who like tomatoes, olive oil and peppers this is the right place! The sea-food paella is deliciousss... the oven-baked rice... hummm... you'll miss it!

How did you find accommodation?

Through the Human Resources department in the organisation where I did my internship. The mediator between me and the department was the International Relations Office in my university, they give you fundamental support in your trip!

How are the accommodation prices? And the prices in general?

The prices generally follow the usual market rules. Accommodation in the centre of cities is expensive due to the proximity to shops and leisure activities. In the subrubs the accommodation is always cheaper, but are similar to prices in Portugal. As my accommodation was settled by my department, I managed to live with two colleagues of mine where the rent was €400 plus light, water and gas bills! But it was a good apartment, close to the centre of a village 20km from the centre of Valencia. But don't worry about being further from the centre because the public transport in Valencia exceeds expectations.

What's the language like? Did you attend a language course at the university?

I was only there for 3 months. I was a Professional Erasmus intern. I didn't attend a language course, I had to kind of teach myself. But the language isn't difficult (I'm talking in terms of Castilian because Valenciano is a bit more complicated).

What is the cheapest way to get to Valencia from your city?

By plane (Porto - Valencia) and you have low-cost flights for those who don't have much luggage.

You can also take the Lusitania Hotel train, it is a bit different, however, comfortable, but you have to change in Madrid.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Valencia?

This depends on your tastes, the city is divided into zones and in each one there is a different style of music. During the festive periods the streets are always bustling, Medieval Markets (for example)... A little of everything! You just have to keep up with what is in the local newspaper.

And eating out in Valencia? Can you name your favourite places?

I can't think of names. The most expensive area is next to the beach, but it's also one of the best areas for trying the regional gastronomy.

And in terms of cultural visits?

You can't miss The City of Arts and Sciences, Oceanography, The Bio Park, the Plaza de Toros and, of course, the historical area with the cathedral and art museums which are right in the middle of the city.

For those of you who like going to the beach, I recommend Dénia, the water is warm and the beach is quiet! And, of course, you have to go to Albufera for a boat ride... unforgettable!

But in the surrounding areas, like Alzira, you could take a trip to the mountains which are always covered in snow during the winter.

Do you have any advice you'd like to give future students in Valencia?

Make the most of this experience. Organise your time well so that you can enjoy everything because the city is fantastic and living there is amazing.

I miss it!
