Experience in Vaasa, Finland by Sanna
What is the student lifestyle like in Vaasa?
There are a lot of student parties in Vaasa, there is always something going on every week. I highly recommend to take part of these parties, there's so much fun!
How much does it cost to live in Vaasa?
You can easily find an accommodation under 300 euros. Food is pretty expensive, but there are a few supermarkets which are good for students: Citymarket, Minimani and Lidl. Student lunch is around 2, 60 € with milk, bread and salad included.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vaasa? Is there any advice you can give?
There is a student housing organization called VOAS, where you can find a flat. There are also apartments in private markets, but the landlords usually want long-term residents (1 year at least).
What places would you recommend visiting in Vaasa?
You should definitely visit the bridge of Raippaluoto, which is the longest bridge in Finland. The bridge brings you to the islands which are part of Unesco's World Heritage area.
Is it good to eat out in Vaasa? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are not so many restaurants in Vaasa. One popular place is Fondis, the same company which has also a night club called Fontana.
Is the nightlife good in Vaasa? Where is good to go?
The one and only night club is Fontana, and you can spot lots of students there. Every Wednesday there is a student party.
What advice would you give future students heading to Vaasa?
Buy a bicycle! You can transport easily with a bicycle, you don't need a bus card (also because there is a such bad public transport). And if you're going to Vaasa in winter, prepare yourself for the cold ocean wind.
