Estelle's Erasmus experience in Toulouse, France

What do you think of Toulouse as a place to live? Would you recommend it? What's it like?

Toulouse is a very beautiful student city that I would highly recommend.

In France we call it "Ville rose", or "The Pink city". This is because its architecture is quite special and consists mainly of pink stones. However, the buildings are not very tall like they are in most big cities which is nice.

It is very easy to move around the city with the subway, which has two lines that connect the entire city. There are also lots of bus routes and usually one a bus will pass every ten minutes.

To pay less, as a less expensive option I recommend you to buy the "Carte tisseo" which is only 10 euros per month and with it you can take the subway and the bus whenever you want: it is without limit.

What is the student atmosphere like in Toulouse?

There are three universities in Toulouse, which represents many students: the law university: "Toulouse 1 Capitole", the university of arts, letters and languages: "Toulouse 2 - le Mirail" but has just changed its name, it is called: " Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès "today, and finally the university of sciences and sports:" Toulouse 3: Paul Sabatier ".

However, students from different universities do not mix much during the "soirées étudiantes", or "student nights" because they simply do not have the same ways to enjoy a night.

If you want to go out, there are many bars in Toulouse, also discos.

How much does it cost to live in Toulouse?

The rent for one person is at least 300 euros up to 600 euros depending on the location of the apartment.

I recommend living in shared housing when you come to study.

The food is not very expensive, can be eaten by a person with 150 euros per month.

Did you have trouble finding accommodation in Toulouse? Can you give any advice?

No, it's quite easy with the internet today, I recommend sites:

For a person who wants to live alone:

  • Pap.fr
  • Se loger
  • Century 21

Pour les collocations:

  • Recherche colocation
  • Le bon coin
  • Viva Street

How is the food of the country? What are your favorite dishes?

For me, the best food in France is that of the Toulouse region, it is called "gastronomie du Sud-Ouest".

You eat a lot of meat: cow (Boeuf: "entrecôte", "tartare" (raw), "filet", "rôti", "steak", "côtes", etc. ), pork (Porc: "côtes", "saucisse de Toulouse", "rôti", etc. ), chicken (Poulet: "cuisses", "blancs") and their speciality : the duck which is delicious ("aiguilletes", "magret", "foie gras", etc.)
