Why did you choose to go to Thessaloniki, Greece?

I have stayed in Thessaloniki when I was working as an intern - Archaeologist in northern Greece. I have chosen this location for the tremendous amount of cultural activities that this region has to offer.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I stayed in the area for about 6 weeks.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Thessaloniki to other students?

Absolutely.

What is the food like?

Mediterranean cuisine. Try Gyros and Souvlaki. Thessaloniki is also a great place for seafood.

How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?

Greece is one of the more affordable European countries, therefore Thessaloniki did not really strain my wallet, although I didn't have a huge budget.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Learning the alphabet may take a while, but getting the hang of the basics of Greek is not that difficult. After two - three weeks you can expect to maintain a basic level of communication in your daily life.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Thessaloniki from your city?

I have travelled Thessaloniki from Istanbul. Although the airfares may vary between 150 - 300 Eur, it is possible to travel by bus for much cheaper, somewhere around 100 eur return (but bus takes much longer).

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Thessaloniki?

Ladadika area has wonderful restaurants. Also the Aristotle Square offers a good entertainment.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Thessaloniki?

There are many great restaurants around the Ladadika (old bazaar area) and Leof. Nikis street which is on the seaside.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The archaeological museum, Byzantine Museum. Museum and Palace of Aigai in Vergina. Pella Museum, Pella archaeological site are great options.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Thessaloniki in the future?

Greek people are generally very nice and helpful. Make sure you get out of Thessaloniki and visit places like Khalkidiki (fantastic beaches there...)
