Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by Tatiana
What is it like to live in Thessaloniki? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
it is a small city, easy to learn with kind people that are always helpfull.
What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?
there are a ot of students in thessaloniki, so the city is ready for you! there are places with cheap food, cheap drinks, clothing etc but also places with more expencive things. students have discounts in some places bu there are also a lot of places just for students. public transportation takes you to every university (even the ones that are outside of the city).
How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?
you can find places from 150 euros to 400 euros per month. it depends on what you are looking for. food is very cheap (from 0,70 euro hot-dogs and pizza to 10euro asian food and huge burgers) the most common food (gyros) costs 2-3euros.
drings are from 3 to 10 euros (depends on the drink and the clab you chose)
transportation is 1 euro per ride or 1,5 for two rides within 90 minutes or 2 euros for as many rides as you want in 24 hours
but the city is small so it is easy to walk from place to place (not always ofcourse).
also clothing can be really cheap (3-9 euros a t-shirt) (thights 8-15 euros) (jeans from 15 euros)etc
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Thessaloniki? Is there any advice you can give?
try finding a place near the city center so you will never have to use a taxi or a bus (university-nightlife-shopping-cafeterias-eating places-hospital... everythin is in the city center). with the economic crisis in greece, houses are really cheap (you can find a 2 or 3 big bedroom apartment with 300 euros) (3,5-4,5 euros per m2)
find someone to live with... it is a lot cheaper!!!!
and avoid the place next to the train station.. it is cheaper but not the cleanest neighborhood
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
in thessaloniki we love food!!! the city is full of restaurands, fast food... even cafeterias have food...
i recomend to try the famous souvlaki and gyros but there are also great pizzas, burgers, asian food, mexican food and everything you want... it doesn't matter where you are... you will always find something to eat within 50 meters.... :-P
What places would you recommend visiting in Thessaloniki?
in thessaloniki there are not many archaological places.. we have the white tower and the old castles but it is better if you visit other cities near thessaloniki.. with more archaiological value...
but we have a lot of beautiful places.. try drinking coffe near the sea or in the old city, or in panorama, or at kwnstantinopolitika.. the view is great...
Is it good to eat out in Thessaloniki? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
we always eat out!!
there are a lot of good spots but it depends on what you like to eat..ask the students in your university.. they know the secrets...
Is the nightlife good in Thessaloniki? Where is good to go?
there is somewhere to go at all time of the day... clabs usually open at 11 at night. some close at 4-5 in the morning and some close at 7am. the caffeterias are open almost all day long, from 9am to 2am...also there are fast foods for after the clabbing...
What advice would you give future students heading to Thessaloniki?
try to find a place near the city center, and make sure that you have a lot of party clothes!
