Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by Sofie
What is it like to live in Thessaloniki? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Thessaloniki is an amazing city. It has so many young people and lots of cafes bars clubs and tavernas. Always something to do Monday or Saturday. There are many busses but the traffic is busy and buss is the only public transportation. The waterfront is amazing and appeals people in every age to take a stroll or a coffee. Thessaloniki isn't so beautiful in the center. The buildings are grey and mass-produced . But the beauty in this city doesn't lay on the external surface.
What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?
It's the best student city I think. There are many cheap places for food and drinks. The university is big. The uni area is pretty ugly and in bad shape. But the activities outside of uni are plenty and there is a big community.
How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?
Drinks and food you can find cheap. The rents are also cheap compared to Northern Europe. You can find a flat around 200-300€ with everything included. The supermarkets aren't so cheap. But depends on what you eat. Partying is cheap. All places are free entrance and the shots and beers just costs a few euros .
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Thessaloniki? Is there any advice you can give?
Don't stress. You will find a place when you arrive. Nobody had a problem with this. You don't have to find one before you arrive if you don't want to.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Greek food. Traditional. Most of the restaurants had good quality food because it isn't a tourist city. It's for the locals. Very delicious food. But for the best and cheapest food avoid the sea area and ladadika.
What places would you recommend visiting in Thessaloniki?
The old castle with the great view. Bring some beers. Kalamaria which is kind of an own city built into thessaloniki. For a Sunday coffee. The whole waterfront of course.
Is it good to eat out in Thessaloniki? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Like I said earlier it has great restaurants. My favourite is Rouga, in venezelou Street. Around the area of valaoritou and venezelou there are many great and cheap places.
Is the nightlife good in Thessaloniki? Where is good to go?
Valaoritou is the party area . Lots of clubs and bars. And for Erasmus parties 8ball nightclub!
What advice would you give future students heading to Thessaloniki?
Don't stress. Everything will solve itself. The uni is slow with courses and so on. Everything is done when the semester starts, don't worry. If anything goes wrong it's OK cause the culture here is so flexible that people will help you even if it's 2 weeks later for example. Don't worry !
