Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by Pantazis

What is it like to live in Thessaloniki? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Thessaloniki is a beautiful city, full of history and welcoming people. It's the co-Capital of Greece and attracts a big number of tourists and students every year! It is considered to be the best city in Greece for having fun. I live in Thessaloniki and I believe it's a very nice place to live.

What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?

Thessaloniki is known as a great students' city in Greece. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, one of the public universities, is the biggest one in Balkans! I have never heard any student being disapointed for studying in this city. There are lots of students parties and good food for everyone. Thessaloniki was the European Youth Capital for 2014!

How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?

I met once a Spanish guy who came on Erasmus Programme in Thessaloniki and he shared an apartment with another student, which costed for each one 200 euros, including everything! You can have a coffee giving from 2.50 to 3.50 euros and you can eat a Greek gyros at the price of aprox. 3.00 euros! The price of the monthly bus card for students is 15 euros and you can take as many buses you like, at any time!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Thessaloniki? Is there any advice you can give?

I don't know much oabout this, but you can ask the ESN of Thessaloniki.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

You are going to love the Greek salad, the Greek gyros, the moussakas, the Greek souvlaki and, for sure, you should taste the dishes in a good traditional restaurant , known as tavern! But, try to find the good ones.

What places would you recommend visiting in Thessaloniki?

The white Tower (symbol of the city). The statue of Alexandre the Great. The Arch of Galerius (Kamara). The Aristotle Square. The sea side of the city (it's just for walking, not for swimming). The Archaeological Museum. The Museum of Byzantine Culture. The Concert Hall. The Port of Thessaloniki, a touristic place with cinema theatres, where you can enjoy the International Short Film Festival of Thessaloniki. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (the biggest University in Balkans). The HELEXPO (an international exhibition area). The castles, located in the Upper Town (Ano Poli), where you can have a great view of the city. The Byzantine churches. And so on :)

Is the nightlife good in Thessaloniki? Where is good to go?

Very popular areas for having fun during the night are ''Valaoritou''(mostly for bars and clubs) and ''Laladika'' (mostly for bouzoukia, but also for bars and some beer). Usually, there are some parties in the Aristotle University campus.
