Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by Lenoulou

What is it like to live in Thessaloniki? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Big city, but not as big to make you feel lonely. Despite the fact that it's my hometown, I would definitely recommend it for Erasmus studies, because there are many students from Greece and abroad studying in this city.

What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?

Thessaloniki's moto is "Chill out" so lifestyle is not intense. There's always something to do and occupy yourself, from a convesation with friends over a cup of coffee to festivals, gigs, theater or street performances (you never know when these pop up in the middle of the street!)

How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?

Living in Thessaloniki is cheap, if you are a student, you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the student restaurant for free!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Thessaloniki? Is there any advice you can give?

Most Erasmus students live in the university dorms so I would recommend that you speak with the university's international office about accomodation, they will probably tell you whom to contact, and provide you with more details.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The cuisine in Thessaloniki is one of the best in Greece (that's what I've heard from non-natives, I 'm biased I can't express my opinion :P). You can find something to eat with 1 euro!

What places would you recommend visiting in Thessaloniki?

I suggest that you visit the city's museums and of course the White Tower, the city's symbol monument.

Is it good to eat out in Thessaloniki? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Eating out in Thessaloniki is easy; you can find anything you might want to eat within 800m of distance. There's a great variety of dishes, from sandwiches and gyros and souvlaki, to complete cooked meals and asian food and crepes!

Is the nightlife good in Thessaloniki? Where is good to go?

Nightlife in Thessaloniki is vivid! Almost everynight there's some kind of event oeganised. Clubs and bars with Greek and mainstream pop music across the see shore, rock and metal clubs, pubs and reggae bars are numerous! In case you just want to grab a beer and chill out and enjoy the warm weather, you can meet your friends in the beach next to White Tower, just sit on the grass and talk with them for hours!

What advice would you give future students heading to Thessaloniki?

Future students in Thessaloniki should live on the moment and try to explore every corner of the city! The possibilities are so numerous that I guess you won't visit all the places (bars, restaurants, monuments, places of interest) until your exchange is over! But it's worth trying! Enjoy :)
