Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by george
What is it like to live in Thessaloniki? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Thessaloniki is a city to live in. I would recommend it to everyone, from students to adults seeking for something different and friendly. The city has a huge variety of places to see and do depending on the individual´s interests.
What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?
Students from all over Greece study in Thessaloniki and it seems to them as an experience of a lifetime. Even though some spend only a few years, it will always be a milestone in their lives.
How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?
In general it is not that expensive. You can find cheap accommodation in comparison with other countries and depending on your taste, lifestyle can be cheap or expensive.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Thessaloniki? Is there any advice you can give?
As far as I know, there are private student dorms as well as university ones. I have no idea though in terms of the prices.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Traditional Greek food is very delicious and different than the rest of European cuisine. It's all about the Mediterranean in the end!
What places would you recommend visiting in Thessaloniki?
The old city as well as the White Tower are a must. Other than these, there are open markets, several museums, parks and don't forget that the beach is only an hour from the city center.
Is it good to eat out in Thessaloniki? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Eating out is quite common in Thessaloniki. Favourite spots are around Aristotelous Square, Ladadika and Valaoritou. Street food is always cheap and delicious! Most restaurants are open until early morning for the ones who decide to spend a night out partying.
Is the nightlife good in Thessaloniki? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is also great because you can literally walk from one place to another. There are places for different tastes and in most you don't have to pay an entrance to enter. That is the exception. Again, nightlife is around Valaoritou and Ladadika, or even by the seaside of Thessaloniki where you have many clubs as well.
What advice would you give future students heading to Thessaloniki?
I am sure that the ones who decide to spend a semester or a year studying in Thessaloniki will not regret their decision! People are friendly, lifestyle is amazing and if you give it a try and learn some Greek that would be quite interesting and challenging! It will definitely be an experience of a lifetime. According to what people have told me, they always recall Thessaloniki and always want to come back. It is a city that combines the sea and the mountain, not chaotic but cozy and nice. Hope that this helps!
