Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by Alexandra

What is it like to live in Thessaloniki? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Thessaloniki is a beautiful place to live during your studies. The city is full of coffee places, restaurants, cinemas and theatres. Also, it combines sea (only 1 hour far away from Halkidiki beaches for the summer) and there are many mountain activities during the winter (e.g. skiing - snowboard, hiking to Olympos mountain).

What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?

The only hard period for the students is during the exams, otherwise there are many parties at the university campus, activities for free (yoga, dance classes in the uni-gym)!

How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?

At the moment, I don't know exactly because I left the country before the crisis.
I guess it is not expensive, the rent per person is roughly 150-200E plus the food (5-10 euros per day).

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Thessaloniki? Is there any advice you can give?

It is a bit difficult because the flats in the centre are quite old without proper heating systems.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is yummy!! Many options and amazing street food.
There are lovely bakeries with very tasty cakes e.g. Kokkinos Fournos or Blue bakery.

What places would you recommend visiting in Thessaloniki?

Archaeological museum, Modern Art museum, Yedi Kule, Kemal Ataturk House museum.

Is it good to eat out in Thessaloniki? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

My favorite spots are: Elenidis triangles (Τριγωνα Ελενιδη) close to Navarinou square for the best sweets in the town, and the small mezze place, called Oraia Ellas at 9, Konstantinou palaiologou str.

Is the nightlife good in Thessaloniki? Where is good to go?

I love the brewery called Prigkipos at 22 Apostoloy Paulou street next to the Turkish Consulate. A nice place to hear live music is ΜΑLT and JAZZ. There are many many other options in Siggrou street.

What advice would you give future students heading to Thessaloniki?

Try different dishes, go around the town and have fun.
