Why did you choose to go to Thessaloniki, Greece?
My choice was between Athens and Thessaloniki to study Greek. I chose to study in Thessaloniki because I had never been there before, because of the waterfront (I like to go running in the mornings), and because the Aristotle University seemed to be very good from what I saw on the internet.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I did not receive a scholarship.
What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?
I studied with 180 international students. I am a Greek living in Australia, and I finished university almost 10 years ago. Studying with international students was fun and everyone was friendly and got along well.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Thessaloniki to other students?
Absolutely. Thessaloniki is a beautiful city, with many things to do. It is relaxed and easy going. The university was professional and well organised and I enjoyed my time there.
What is the food like?
The food is always good quality and cheap. You can have an enormous meal for 4 euros (enough for two meals! ).
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Thessaloniki?
I found my accommodation through Airbnb.
How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?
Food is cheap, and I discovered there are much cheaper accommodation than Airbnb. Everyday life is not expensive if you are careful.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Greek is a difficult language, but the School of Modern Greek Language at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki offered excellent Greek courses.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Thessaloniki from your city?
From Australia, of course by plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Thessaloniki?
Lalathika and the waterfront.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
There are many old monuments to visit in this old city.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Thessaloniki in the future?
Select accommodation in the city if possible - everything will be walking distance and nothing is more than 10 minutes away by foot.
