Erasmus Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by Jovanna
Why did you choose to go to Thessaloniki, Greece?
Because of the good weather, and to see trough the stereotype of Greece (poor people, crisis etc) given by the Western media. I wanted to see the real Greece.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
From the European Union (Erasmus scholarship) I get in total for my 4,5 months of being here around €900.
What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?
Very good. Thessaloniki is a real studentcity with wherever you look a lot of styles and people hanging out. The saying about Thessaloniki never sleeps is defenitely true.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Thessaloniki to other students?
I would! The only thing ''annoying'' thing is that the university is spread through the whole city and isn't close to eachother. But when you're used to it is it fine.
What is the food like?
Great! I almost go to a taverna (traditional greek restaurant) every week. Maybe even too good. There is so much to try and it is all very good. So not a good place if you want to be on a diet ;)
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Thessaloniki?
No, I actually moved while my stay in Thessaloniki. Because I lived too far away from the centre. So, that is important! Choose a place close to the centre and other students (Kamara).
How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?
I don't know exactly, but for Aristotle students you have free food three times a day! So that helps a lot. But I think I spend around €600 every month...
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It is not a very easy language, also because the letters are different. But there are courses (I have semester course) and it is really helpful.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Thessaloniki from your city?
By plain. If you book your flight on time it is very cheap.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Thessaloniki?
There are two areas: Valaritou and Ladadika with several clubs. And Erasmus people always gather at Drink&Go near Kamara (cheap beers).
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Thessaloniki?
There are too many good places. I say: explore for yourself! But the taverna's in Bit Bazar are really reccomendable.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Enough, Thessaloniki has a lot of museums and old places of the city like Kamara, Rotonda and in the upper city parts of the old wall.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Thessaloniki in the future?
Learn a bit Greek, always useful!
