Erasmus Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece, by Colin
Why did you choose to go to Thessaloniki?
Because it's a very lively student city, which is ideal for an Erasmus destination, either on a University level (almost 100 000 students in total) or for the activities.
How long did you stay there? How much did you get in financial help?
About 2000 euros bursary for 10 months, baring in mind that I don't get a lot of help compared to others.
How did you find the student atmosphere in Thessaloniki?
Excellent! As I have already said there are almost 100 000 students in the city (and 2 or 3 different Universities), taking into account that about 300 000 - 400 000 people live in the city, that's a lot of young people! And therefore the atmosphere is great.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Thessaloniki to other students?
Without any hesitation.
What do you think of this country's food?
Very good, as long as you like Mediterranean food of course. Above all the food is quite cheap, especially in the small typical Greek restaurants.
Did you find it difficult to find accommodation in Thessaloniki?
Not really, I organised mine in advance therefore I didn't have problems, if you at least do your research and plan enough.
What's the living cost in Thessaloniki?
Of course it depends on each person's habits, but I would say that it's possible to withdraw about 200 euros a month (not including accommodation) and still enjoy yourself a bit, but not too much.
How did you find learning the language? Did you attend any course run by the University?
I didn't learn the local language, the Greeks all speak English, I didn't need to, nor want to learn it.
What's the cheapest way to get to Thessaloniki from your city?
Undoubtedly, by plane.
Which places would you recommend to go to for a night out in Thessaloniki?
The old Roman centre of town (around Kamar and Rotonda) or the outskirts of the port, which are the two places where most people meet to go out, no matter the day or the time.
And what about eating in Thessaloniki? Tell us about your favourite places.
As I said for the nights out, I would say the port, baring in mind that there is also the old town (Ano Poli), a very traditional and charming place (which is a bit more pricey than the rest of the city).
And what cultural visits would you recommend?
The several museums that the city has to offer, especially the one with the white tower. There is also the castle in Ano Poli (overlooking the bay, no less! ).
Any tips for future students in Thessaloniki?
Just go!
