Erasmus Experience in Thessaloniki, Greece by Carla
Why did you choose to go to Thessaloniki, Greece?
Thessaloniki was a truly unexpected choice and I never thought of having my first experience abroad right here. It is a city that I would recommend to anyone because it is quite cheap and above all there is a lot of student life thanks to the various clubs, and activities
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
my erasmus mobility in greece was 6 months for a total of 250 € per month
What is the student lifestyle like in Thessaloniki?
it is a pity that Thessaloniki is not well known as a city of Greece if not the classic three.
It is very student-friendly and there are many facilities such as the canteen that will save you a lot, offering free food from Monday to Sunday for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I lived far from university and rarely went to breakfast, but to be totally free is a holy thing
Would you recommend the city and the University of Thessaloniki to other students?
absolutely yes, for me it was a pleasant discovery. someone who did not even know the city of Thessaloniki speaks to you
before
Erasmus. do not hide that the first impression just arrived was "but where did I end up" ?! to love every single thing and the thought of leaving shortly for the end of the Erasmus brings me a little melancholy. You will love it
What is the food like?
sore point, unfortunately Greek cuisine does not drive me crazy, except for the classic Greek taverns. GO, they are super features. Drink and eat with very little, especially at ΜΠΙΤ ΒΑΖΑΡ
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Thessaloniki?
being my first off-site experience, finding a home was not easy and perhaps the only regret of this erasmus. I lived far from the center and all the others and when you are on Erasmus the important thing is to stay close
How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?
to be honest I thought it was cheaper but to say that compared to Italy you save especially in restaurants
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
the official language is Greek and the university offers free courses to Erasmus students. I have not used it
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Thessaloniki from your city?
thank god there are discounts from Esn. however from Catania to Thessaloniki it is a bit of a mess because you have to make two stopovers
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Thessaloniki?
Absolutely Ladadika, where you can find clubs, but they sang only Greek music and i don’t recommend you. In Greece except for erasmus party’s it’s difficult to find clubs with international music and disco party.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Thessaloniki?
Greek Taverna as I talked you before
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
It s a very archeological place
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Thessaloniki in the future?
Have fun and enjoy your erasmus. Don’t be scared and live guys!!
