Erasmus Experience in Thessaloniki AUTH, Greece by Alexandra
Why did you choose to go to Thessaloniki, Greece?
Well, to be honest, my first choice wasn't Thessaloniki. First of all, I wanted to go to Denmark or Netherlands, but they didn't have a contract with my university in Bulgaria. So I had an option between Croatia and Greece. And of course, I choose Greece-Thessaloniki. It's the best decision I have ever taken. My Erasmus is more than wonderful- the best people you can ever meet, the best parties you can ever have and of course very well prepared professors! Thessaloniki is an amazing city with an atmosphere you will never forget. If I have to recommend to you any Erasmus city - this will be it!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship is for 4 months and the amount is 2000 euros. So 500 for a month which is more then enough to live a normal life in Thessaloniki- well, if you are non-smoker like me.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Thessaloniki to other students?
Yes, definitely. For me is one of the best choice I have made. It's incredible how many Erasmus students are here... and the ESN people are doing a great job. Almost every day there are some events that you can join and get more into the Erasmus life. The Erasmus people here at the ESN are like family.
The university I attend is also very good. The lectures are well stractured, very understandable even if you are not the best in English, so its quite a nice experience.
What is the food like?
Food is amazing. The best dishes are Syvlaki, Giros, also Dzadziki, Tiropita. I enjoy the food a lot. Plenty of seafood restaurants!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Thessaloniki?
No. It's really easy to find accommodation in Thessaloniki just you have to check many many websites. I live in a nice apartment in the city center with my own room and all bills included just 225 euros per month. Plenty of choices for the Erasmus students. The most popular flats are near Kamara, which is area full of students.
How much does it cost to live in Thessaloniki?
To have a normal live in Thessaloniki you need like 500-600 euros.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Thessaloniki from your city?
The best way to travel to my city is with bus because its also really cheap it's just- 13 euros (one way) to Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. And the trip is 3 hours which is also not bad at all.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Thessaloniki?
The best places for Erasmus gatherings are "Drink n Go ", "Fast Drink", "8BALL" so-called Valaritou square is full of night clubs and bars, also Kamara area has some interesting spots. The street Ladadika is full of bars and clubs as well. The nightlife is pretty active!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Thessaloniki?
All the tavernas have great food. My favorite place to eat is called "Bit Bazzar" cheap and good!
