Experience in Skopje, Macedonia by Andrej
What is it like to live in Skopje? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Skopje is like living in Wonderland and following the rabbit- you rarely can expect anything, especially with what's going on the last decade. However, people are very happy to hang around and living is cheap for a foreigner from Western Europe or USA/Canada. You will definitely have great time if you try to ignore what has been done to the city the last decade and just go with the flow and meet the locals.
What is the student lifestyle like in Skopje?
Eat unhealthy food, stay up late, sleep during classes, spend your folks' money. Well, that's what an average student in Skopje does. It doesn't mean that you have to fall within this definition, right?
How much does it cost to live in Skopje?
Depends, but fairly cheap in comparison to other cities I've been. Around 400/500 € per month will get you by pretty well.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Skopje? Is there any advice you can give?
I don't know about accommodation in Skopje. There are many rooms and appartments that are under rent.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Macedonian food is wonderful. It is mostly healthy, usually includes meat and bread and is delicious. Skopje is a real treat for all foodophiles out there. Just ask the locals for good places to eat.
What places would you recommend visiting in Skopje?
There are many:
- The Disneyland in the city centre;
- The mountain of Vodno that is very easily reachable;
- The old part of the town (called 'Charshia');
- The antic fort (called 'Kale').
And also pay attention to each and every little detail, because you will constantly discover new things to experience.
Is it good to eat out in Skopje? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Look for Balila and 511- two restaurants specialized in pizza, pasta and similar. Also, look for the restaurants called:
- Enrico (great quality restaurant);
- Martini (pancakes with everything! );
- Fitness House (healthy food, a bit more expensive though);
- Bravo's (wonderful hearty meals with great prices).
Is the nightlife good in Skopje? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is still well, but it has decreased in quality in the last decade. There are many clubs, but I don't visit them so I don't know what to recommend.
What advice would you give future students heading to Skopje?
Open your mind, put aside your fears and let the Universe guide you through Skopje. And you may just find the time of your life.
