Why did you choose to go to Skopje, Macedonia, successor state of Yugoslavia?

I chose Skopje for my university exchange because I wanted somewhere different to the usual destinations. Furthermore, I was interested in the Balkans because I wanted to understand the true impact of the ethnic conflicts in the region.

How long was your stay? How much financial aid did you receive?

I spent a semester in Skopje, before I left I received the equivalent of 500 euros.

What is student life like in Skopje?

There were very few Erasmus students in Skopje, and it wasn't easy to get to know the Macedonian students. It isn't a place to go if you want to party, but better if you are truly interested in understanding the political situation in the Balkans.

Did you struggle to find accommodation in Skopje?

It is better to use a Macedonian as an intermediary to find accommodation because the landlords tend to increase the price of rent when they know that the future tenant is European.

What is the cost of living in Skopje?

The cost of living is really very low, however clothes cost the same as elsewhere.

Is it easy to understand the language? Did you undertake a course organised by the university?

All the classes are in English, however we can choose optional classes in Turkish or Macedonian.

What is the cheapest way to travel from your hometown to Skopje?

There are cheap flights from Paris Beauvais to Skopje by the Hungarian company WIZZ AIR.

What cultural spots are worth a visit?

There are several museums in Skopje, notably the history museum which is very good. Lake Ohrid and the Matka Canyon are equally worth a visit.

Any advice for students going to Skopje in the future?

If you will be staying more than 90 days in Macedonia you will need a visa. Apply in advance because there can be long delays.
