Experience in Sheffield, United Kingdom by Sheyi

What is it like to live in Sheffield? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

If you like hilly areas and vibrant night life Sheffield is a great city for you to explore! The city is quite beautiful and there are a variety of different cultures and nationalities spread across the city. You can find Asian, African or Caribbean shops, hairdressers and groceries.

I would recommend living in Sheffield if you like bustling city life mixed with northern friendliness.

How much does it cost to live in Sheffield?

Transport in and around Sheffield is very student friendly, with buses costing only 50p if you have a valid student i. d. There is also a large train station providing transport all over the country and National Express and Megabus also run through Sheffield.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

There are nice expensive restaurants all over Sheffield as well as cheap fast food places open for the late night party people. From cheap fried chicken to sophisticated sushi places, Frankie & Benny's and Nando's to T. G. I. F. and Bella Italia depending on what you're into you'll find something. Furthermore, there are lovely independent bistro's all over the city and it's really nice when you find a reasonably priced one!

What places would you recommend visiting in Sheffield?

I would recommend visiting Centertainment as it's a great cinema and restaurant complex. There is also a bowling alley and business park close by too. Meadowhall is one of the largest shopping centers in England as well as a great place to have a lovely meal. The Crucible is my favourite theater in Sheffield but there are others including the Lyceum and Lantern Theater which are equally as nice. Sheffield city center is a great place for shopping and the Motorpoint Arena usually has great events and live performances from pop artists.

Is the nightlife good in Sheffield? Where is good to go?

The student nightlife is one of the best parts of Sheffield in my opinion because of the wide variety of places and events. The main throng of the pub/bar/club scene is on West Street which makes navigating around the city simple and organised as you can simply start at the top of the street and work your way down! There are some chain pubs as well as independent places and larger clubs as you reach the bottom of the street. You're always likely to see people dressed up and eventually you may even spot some of them as people you know!

There are hundreds of promoters out trying to lure you into their venue with either cheap drink deals or cheap club entry so it's not always a bad thing to engage in conversation when the 'attack'. Drink prices vary but there are places that do the classic student £1 mixers and have cheap shot offers, there are also places that sell drinks at slightly reduced regular prices so it really just depends where you go. Music ranges from Gothic to rock to r&b to pop, it really is just about exploring West Street and working out which place is right for you.

What advice would you give future students headed to Sheffield?

I came from South London and realised that Northerners are quite friendly in comparison! It's a cheaper lifestyle up north, and can be just as fun but very different not only in terms of accents, but pace of life. Come with an open mind, that way you can't go wrong.
