Experience in Sheffield, United Kingdom by Conrad
What is it like to live in Sheffield? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
As a city it has a homey quality, not too daunting and very hilly which adds to its aesthetic. Plus you can get to the peaks in no time at all which are stunning and great if you’re a geographer like myself.
What is the student lifestyle like in Sheffield?
Sheffield has a large student population so it’s easy to meet up with people and know student areas. Plus it’s cheap which is always good as a student. Moreover it has an active student role in helping refugees which is fantastic.
How much does it cost to live in Sheffield?
In terms of rent, very cheap. My brothers in Bristol and I’m paying a fraction of what he pays and still living in a lovely area. Moreover, food and drink in pubs and so forth is also cheaper which helps the student experience.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sheffield? Is there any advice you can give?
Overall, no, however finding a big house if you want to live with all your friends is a little harder. But if you’re looking for a room it’s very easy.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
There is a wide array of food from good restaurants and take aways with more international cuisine to old English pubs serving great pies. A favourite of mine is the Nottingham house in broomhill. Not only is the pie great it’s also cheap at around £7. There’s also a student favourite in falafel king next to the university where you get a massive falafel wrap that will feed you for lunch and dinner for only £4.
What places would you recommend visiting in Sheffield?
The botanical gardens are lovely, as well as the peace gardens. Both football stadiums have a great atmosphere and are relatively cheap. If you get a chance to go to the peaks take that chance they are fantastic. If pubs are your things, kelham island (old steel industry centre) has an awesome selection of pubs, a number of which have won awards. Plus if you like theatre Sheffield has the largest theatre complex outside London in the crucible which is well worth a visit.
Is it good to eat out in Sheffield? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
For me some of the take aways are fantastic especially at lunch time. Falafel king as I mentioned earlier is a must. There a number of great pubs as well all of which range from gastro pubs with a more eclectic range of dishes down to the classic British pub dishes of pies and fish & chips.
Is the nightlife good in Sheffield? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is great and cheap and there is a wide mix. I’d recommend the night kitchen, hopeworks, the students union always organise good events, the Harley, all the bars along west st are good fun. Plus there’s corporation, plug, tank and many more for your more ordinary club night.
What advice would you give future students heading to Sheffield?
Make the most of it. Go on walks, try the beer, eat the food, watch some sport, go to the peaks and don’t be afraid to talk to people all the locals are lovely.
