Experience in Sheffield, United Kingdom by Marie Christine

What is it like to live in Sheffield? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Sheffield it is a great city to live in. The town centre is small enough to make you forget you are in a city. Great Clubs whether you want a studenty place or to go to a fancier Bar or Pub.

What is the student lifestyle like in Sheffield?

The student life is great. The University of Sheffield has one of the best Student Unions in the Country.

There is good accommodation for students, hundreds of societies to join and cheaper night outs.

How much does it cost to live in Sheffield?

Because Sheffield is up North it can be a lot cheaper to live there than a lot of cities further south. Renting a room can be around 50-100 pounds a week.

Travel can be pretty cheap, especially if you are a student.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sheffield? Is there any advice you can give?

Sheffield is the same as anywhere, when it comes to accommodation it is easier to get it when you are already in the country and have the ability to look around. Most students try to get their accommodation sorted around December time for the next year of Study.

There are lots of room mate finder websites for England and Sheffield is always included in these. But because it is such a studenty city there is always somewhere available to rent, you just have to look for it.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food in Sheffield is the same as anywhere in England really. Which means any type of food you are craving you can get it easily. Although it has some especially good Indian restaurants around. You can find all the beloved chains Nandos, Pizza Express etc.

What places would you recommend visiting in Sheffield?

Anywhere. It isn't the most cultural place. However, there are a couple museums and an Art Gallery.

Meadowhall is a massive shopping centre which you could spend a whole day looking around.

If you can go out into the Peak District I would also recommend that.

Is it good to eat out in Sheffield? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

No matter where you go in Sheffield there will be food places on every street where you can eat at. Some restaurants are also open really late.

I haven't found a bad restaurant yet. Although Balti King is a place to go with societies after a night out and probably not a place you would take someone on a date.

Is the nightlife good in Sheffield? Where is good to go?

The night life is amazing and is always busy.

West Street is where a lot of pubs and bars are and can be a good start for a night out.

I especially like starting at Vodka Revolution, although the cocktails can be expensive you only need a couple.

Good clubs are Plug, Leadmill and Corp (Corp has mixed reviews but if you are a student and it is a Wednesday that is the place to be).

What advice would you give future students headed to Sheffield?

Join any society. They all throw events and nights out.

If you have the opportunity to live in student Halls, do it (I recommend Endcliffe). You will be living in a student village which has its own bar. A great way to meet people. Besides it has really good accommodation comparatively to a lot of Universities, which unfortunately makes it more expensive than finding a normal flat but it is worth it if you want the true English university experience.

Try every student night going you will find at least that you will love. And just enjoy it really!
