What is it like to live in Sheffield? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Sheffield is one of the best cities in the UK, in my opinion. The city centre has everything you need from shops to the amazing nightlife. Throughout the city centre, there is a tram service that helps you get around, as well as a bus service. As the city is, essentially, catered for students, the taxi and uber service are cheap as well as club entry and drinks. The people are super friendly and there's a nice balance between metropolitan and countryside.

What is the student lifestyle like in Sheffield?

THE NIGHTLIFE IN SHEFFIELD IS INCREDIBLE. Whether you like grime or indie music, there is a club for you and the drinks are dirt cheap. There is even an international night on a Friday where you can meet all of the international students. The majority of clubs are found either on or around Carver street but you can find the odd one (TANK, Plug! and CODE) dotted about nearby. If clubs aren’t your thing, there is a wide variety of bar/pubs and cafes where you are sure to find the atmosphere you are looking for.

How much does it cost to live in Sheffield?

It's a lot cheaper than living in France that's for sure. Depending on your budget, you can find anything from a one bedroom flat in the city centre or a shared house on Ecclesall road. There are a variety of supermarkets around Sheffield or you can use their online service and get it delivered to you. You can do a weekly food shop for £20 and rent can vary from £300 a month upwards including bills. It all just depends on what you are looking for.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

As I’ve previously mentioned, Sheffield is perfect for students. There are thousands of restaurants of all different types. If you fancy fast food, there are plenty such as Mcdonalds, Taco Bell, 5 guys etc. Or if you fancy something a little different, there is a fabulous restaurant on West street called Fear X Loathing that is one of my personal favourites. Not only is the food INCREDIBLE but the staff are great.

So even if you don’t like British style dishes, don’t panic. There is a wide variety so there is no chance you’ll go hungry.

What places would you recommend visiting in Sheffield?

Meadow hall: Grab the tram from the town centre to Meadowhall to enjoy a full day of shopping and a variety of restaurants.

Devonshire green: In the centre of the city, you’ll find Devonshire green where, if weather permits, you can enjoy a picnic or skate.

Peak district: Fancy a hike? The Peak district is renowned for its stunning views and amazing walking trails. Definitely worth going at least once.

Sheffield Botanical Gardens: Up off Ecclesall road, you’ll find the Botanical Gardens where you can take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life without venturing too far.

Is the nightlife good in Sheffield? Where is good to go?

There has been an international event that has been running for just over 3 years now with the aim to bring international and native students together. Check out their Facebook page for more info/tickets/photos.

Another club to hit, especially on a Saturday night, is Paris Sheffield on Carver Street. The music is always top with DJ Joe Lobel and the drinks deals are an absolute steal. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ParisSheffield/

What advice would you give future students heading to Sheffield?

ADVICE: If you are staying in Sheffield for a semester or a full year, I strongly recommend applying to work for either Organised Chaos or your favourite club because it’s what I did and you essentially get paid to have a good time and you meet the most amazing people.

Always ask if you get a discount with your student card, you’d be surprised how many places give you -10%or more.

I hope you have a lovely time in one of the best cities and if you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to drop me a message.
