Experience in Rome, Italy by Santiago
What is it like to live in Rome? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I got to know the city on holiday. It's an amazing city, the history that you can find in its every corner lets you imagine all of the different periods the city has been through. Everything that's important there is close and the metros run quite well.
What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?
It's exquisite, Italian food is my favourite kind of food. There's pasta with loads of different sauces, pizza, lasagnas, even salads, I wasn't used to eating them, they're very delicious.
Where would you recommend to visit in Rome?
A good place to start your tour, which isn't as visited as other places, is the Piramide di Caio Cestio, it's a good start point. From there, you should go to the obvious sites, il Palatino (with its Roman forum) and the Colosseum, don't forget to go to the Arco di Costantino. From there, you can go by the statues of Cesar and the pillars of Ancient Rome. You also have to go to the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon di Roma and la Fontana di Trevi (if they've finished the maintenance when you get there). When you go to Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, remember to go by the Castel Sant´Angelo and the Piazza Cavour is nearby, which is also a very pretty place to visit. I visited a few other places, but I think my recommendation is that you should picture what some of these places will look like at night time, and whichever ones take your fancy, you should visit them again at night. For example, you should visit the Colosseum in the day and at night.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Rome in the future?
Enjoy yourself, it's a city that literally takes you back in time. If you can keep your childlike sense of wonder, you'll be able spend hours and hours walking around the city and looking at the monuments, like I did.
