Experience in Rome, Italy by Nadine
What is it like to live in Rome? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Rome is a really old beautiful city, the italian people are really nice and helpful and the weather is perfect in the autumn and the spring! The transportation is really bad in Rome I recommend people to live near metro stations and do not depend on the buses and they make a strike almost every month in public transportation.
The food is amazing obviously and it is not a very expensive city but please avoid eating in touristic places as they are very expensive and not worth it, try the local places. Most of the people do not speak English so you must at least learn the basics of the italian language before going to Rome. Do not trust the people who sell stuff in the streets of Rome, some stuff are good and others are wreck and they give you crazy prices first so you have to bargain. Rome is not a place for parties so do not expect to party every week when you go there. You have to visit all the historical places, Rome is an open museum and that is the beauty of this city.
How much does it cost to live in Rome?
You can live there starting with 300 euros a month, and you can find a room to rent starting from 300 euros or less, I am not sure you can find something less! You pay 35 euros for the transportation every month and you pay from 20 to 25 euros every week for food shopping!
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Rome? Is there any advice you can give?
Not so difficult if you are searching for a an ordinary room, but very difficult if you are looking for a modern room in a modern house with a reasonable price! You can search on uniplaces.com or spotahome.com. I highly recommend Uniplaces, they are more trustworthy, they take reasonable commissions and they have excellent customer service.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Italian food is amazing off course! I love everything pasta, pizza, risotto, tiramisù and ice cream!
What places would you recommend visiting in Rome?
Colosseum, Vaticano, Trevi fountain, Piazza di Spagna, Trastevere, magnum ice cream, Piazza Venezia and Piazza Navona.
