Erasmus Experience in Rome, Italy by Nicolina
Why did you choose to go to Rome, Italy?
I went along with an impulsive decision of mine and took a one way ticket to Rome. It was one of the best decisions of my life and I have been living here for about 2 years now. Not only is Rome a great city but a good home-base to explore other cities and countries from due to the 2 airports that are both easy to get to and have departures to mostly every country.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I don't have a scholarship.
What is the student lifestyle like in Rome?
There are many Americans as well as young Italian students especially in areas as Trastevere and Testaccio during the night.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Rome to other students?
I would recommend the city but I would not recommend any of the American Universities here.
What is the food like?
Rome is part of Italy (the food capital of the world) but is not the ideal place if you want an authentic Italian meal. Every region is very different in their traditional meals so don't think of the food as "Italian" but food of the region that you are visiting.
How much does it cost to live in Rome?
If you are looking to live here, a decent apartment should cost around 475 euros a month for a room and food is very cheap from fruit and veggie stands as well as the supermarkets.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It is easy if you immerse yourself with the locals, there are many language courses available all over Rome.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Rome from your city?
I am from Delaware so I fly from the Philadelphia airport.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Rome?
Testaccio is my favorite area, but I would recommend going on a type of pub crawl with an organization called the Colosseum Team that meats at the Metro B line- Colosseum. They are very organized and get you acquainted with local bars and clubs in the city.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Everywhere you walk you will find historical sights. Many are actually free and on the last Sunday every month many of the monuments that do cost money are free as well. The typical places are the Vatican, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Castle San Angelo, and the Sistine Chapel but I would recommend to also take a visit to Gianicolo Hill where there is an amazing view over Rome and a trip to Eataly (the large supermarket chain run by the Slow Food Movement) in Ostiense.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Rome in the future?
Do not bring heals and pack zip lock baggies, they come in handy. Also prepare with medicine as well because it is cheaper in the states than here. Leave some room in your suitcase to also bring things home.
