Erasmus Experience in Rome, Italy by Adrian
Why did you choose to go to Rome, Italy?
It was a city that I was already familiar with and the first time I went there I liked it a lot.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship lasted six months and I got enough money to live off comfortably.
What is the student lifestyle like in Rome?
It's a good lifestyle, because you get to know people from other places apart from Spain.
Would you recommend the city and the university of Rome to other students?
Yes, it's easy to get to any of the universities there, as the public transport take can you anywhere. There's also a business called car2go, where you can sign up and you can use any of their branded cars, they have an app and you can see where you are on it and you can open the car with your phone, it's great to get home from really late parties.
What is the food like there?
The speciality there is very good, but in Spain, we have things that are a much better.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Rome?
Hire an intermediary, which is what I did, because if I hadn't, it would've been very hard to find something on my own, since in the beginning I wasn't very good at Italian.
How much does it cost to live in Rome?
It depends on the person, but, personally, I didn't find it as expensive as people said it was. It all depends on how you spend your money and things like that. You can try and cook at home, etc, I don't know, it's a difficult question.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
I got on very well with Italian. I'm here to work, but it's still for Erasmus and I went on a two week course in my home city, which wasn't very useful. Through working here, I get a lot better at it.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Rome?
I got lucky, because I met two girls in the metro one day and they put me in a university group, I wasn't in it, because I was working there and from then on I started to meet people. There's a boy who organises Erasmus parties and he tells you where people are drinking and which is the club for Erasmus students.
And to eat in Rome? What are some of your favourite places to go?
There are too many places to eat to name, but a good, cheap place is in the Trastevere neighbourhood is called Carlo Menta, a lot of Spanish people go there to eat.
Is it good for cultural visits?
It's the best city for culture in Italy by far, I can't say much more.
Do you have any advice for any students coming to Rome in the future?
Don't think twice about it and come here, it's a unique experience. You never know if you'll ever be able to come back.
Another thing that has nothing to do with the question, but which I don't know where else to put it. If anyone, boy or girl, wants to play football, you can do so here, too. I played for the Lazio number 8 and it was another unforgettable experience. There is another Spanish guy who plays with me and he's my best friend here, thanks to him, I got to know more people and they're who I mainly hung out with. I hung out with some of the people from the university, but not very many of them.
If anyone has any other questions, we can talk. This is my number: +393335789038 and if you come to Rome, use that number. If not, I'll be on my Spanish number +343604055460.
