Erasmus experience in Rome, Italy
Why did you decide to go to Rome, Italy?
I chose to go to Rome because it is one of my favourite cities and since the first time I visited it I immediately knew that I wanted to go there for my Erasmus.
How long does the grant last? How much money do you receive as help?
My grant lasted for 5 months and I received €300 each month.
What is the student environment like?
The student environment in Rome is ideal. Yes, it is true that a large part of Erasmus students is Spanish, so if you do not push yourself it is harder to interact with Italian people.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Rome to other students?
Definitely, it is an amazing experience and there is nothing better than living it in Rome. The University of Rome is a bit chaotic, but it is good.
What is the food like?
For a lover of pasta like me it is incredible, although Italian food is not just reduced to pasta like everybody thinks ahah.
Was it hard finding accommodation?
No because I was helped by my classmate who spent the year before in Rome for her Erasmus.
How much does it cost to live?
Living in Rome isn’t exactly cheap. My room was one of the cheapest in the best university zones (Piazza Bologna) and it cost me €400 a month, so with rent added to the cost of transport, food and parties it really adds up.
How’s the language? Do you go to any courses at the university?
Yes, the university gives free courses for each level during the semester.
What is the cheapest way to get to Rome from your city?
The cheapest way is by plane.
What places would you recommend going to at night?
Hulala, Akab (which is a little bit of a dive, but it is the official Erasmus nightclub on Saturdays which by the end of your time will become your new house ahah), AXE (but it is only open in summer) and Shari Vari.
And to eat? What are your favourite places?
Tonnarello, Osteria da Fortunata, La Montecarlo and Carlomenta.
And for cultural visits?
Its Rome! There’s lots of things to see. I would recommend visiting the touristic zones in the first few days and when you get to know the city you will start to lose yourself in the alleys of the city. Also, try to visit the lesser known sites.
Is there any advice you would like to give to future students in Rome?
Enjoy it because it is a unique experience and time flies by.
