Erasmus Experience in Rome, Italy

Why did you choose to go to Rome, Italy?

I chose Rome, because it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world and because I was very eager to get to know Italy... it proved a wise choice, since my time there was one of the best periods of my life!

How long does the grant last? How much money do you receive for help?

The grant was enough to pay for my journeys from Portugal to Italy, I spent Christmas at home but had to go back to Italy for one month after. I received 1130 euros in grants.

What is the student life like in Rome?

It's the best, fantastic, in particular the relationship between Erasmus students! Great socialising!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Rome to other students?

Without doubt, despite the university having a few bureaucratic problems which slowed things down a bit!

What is the food like in Italy?

The best ever! Marvellous pasta.

How did you find accommodation?

I found it on the Internet at the site www.portaportese.it with the help of the hostel owners who hosted me in the first few weeks... the site offers many opportunities to visit apartments!

What are the costs, regarding accommodation? And the costs in general?

In comparison to Portugal it is expensive, but there are cheaper areas in the city and more expensive ones! I lived in the Red di Roma/San Giovanni area and I paid 350 euros per month.

How is the language? Did you participate in a language course in the university?

I love the Italian language, it is so expressive. I participated in a course at the university.

What is the cheapest way to get to Rome from your city?

By plane without doubt, with the low-cost companies!

Where would you recommend for going out at night in Rome?

Circolo degli artisti, piazza San Lorenzo, Trastevere, discoteca Loft, Alien, Testaccio (pyramid zone), Alpheus, Cucagna!

And eating out in Rome? Can you tell us your favourite places?

All the wood-oven pizzerias, and in the Trastevere area the different trattorias!

And what about cultural visits?

There are many which the ESN association provides! Take advantage of them to get to know the city and the country!

Do you have any advice that you would like to give to future students in Rome?

Take advantage of every second of your stay in this city! The best place in the world!

    Hey Christi,

Thanks for your comment. I didnt actually go to Rome or write this article, I just translated it from Portuguese.

If you'd like to know about the website I'd ask Paulo Araujo, because he was the one who went to Rome :)

    Thanks, Hannah
