Basic Icelandic

Basic Icelandic

Source

Since I am trying to encourage everyone to go and enjoy the Icelandic wonders, I want to leave you a basic vocabulary.

In another post I already showed you this phrase...

Ég tala ekki íslensku, which means... I don’t speak Icelandic. Even though now you have to change it to Ég er að læra íslensku... I am learning Icelandic..; )

The first thing you should know is that the alphabet, although it is very similar, is not the same as ours have four different letters.

  • ð: th of; the;
  • æ: to & and;
  • þ: the spanish z or th in thing;
  • ö: u in turn.

Also the vowels are pronounced differently if they have accents or not.

  • A : as it shows a
  • Á: au as; house;
  • E: as it shows e
  • É: ie as; yet;
  • I: as it shows i
  • Í: double ii (alargan la vocal)
  • O: as it shows o
  • Ó: ou in; goat;
  • U: as german ü
  • Ú: as it shows u

Another curiosity is that the accent on the Icelandic words always goes on the first syllable! That's why the; '; (accents) do not indicate the accent but the pronunciation of the vowel.

Here are some useful phrases and words:

  • Hello: Halló
  • Good morning: Góðan daginn!
  • Good night: Góða nótt!
  • Bye: Bless Bless
  • Yes:
  • No: Nei
  • Thanks: Takk fyrir
  • My name is Carmen: Ég heiti Carmen

If you are in love...

  • I love you ég elska þig

For posters of the sites it is important:

  • Open - opið Closed- lokað

For the services:

  • Man- maður Woman- Konur/kona
  • A birthday greeting.... til hamingju með afmælið

So with this it is left for me to wish us Good trip!... Góða ferð!

I leave you a picture of a lamb... dog... Icelandic...
