Erasmus Experience in Rennes, France by simona
Why did you choose to go to Rennes, France?
I never heard about Rennes before going there for my Erasmus and I could find out this is such a pretty town full of young people who enjoy parties and meet different cultures. But at the beginning I have to say that I choose Rennes because it was the best destination for my study of French in the tourism field.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Mine was 5 months but to be honest I do not remember the amount of money that the university gave me to do this experience. Not that big anyway.
What is the student lifestyle like in Rennes?
I have to say that my school was different. It was a proper high school not a uni so the students were very serious and well behaved! Not very up to party during the weekend also because most of them were from another city.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Rennes to other students?
Absolutely yes because this is a city of music and beautiful landscapes. Oh... and delicious gallettes!
What is the food like?
I loved it. The Gallette saucisse and all the sweets with butter!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Rennes?
Yes. I found a flat shared with a French girl from Rennes on the Internet once got Rennes. Very lucky! It was not very expensive for a large single room with double bed.
How much does it cost to live in Rennes?
I think about 500 euro a month all included.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
For me it was very easy because I'm Italian. In my school there was Italian courses and not french classes.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Rennes from your city?
By plane of course. I'm from Sicily.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Rennes?
To the great Rue de la SOIF!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Rennes?
Oh many creperies all around the city.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
- Mont Saint-Michel,
- The Loira castles,
- Saint-Malo,
- Cancale,
- Pointe du Groin...
- The North coast in general (unfortunately I didn't have the time to visit more but I know that the South is also amazing).
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Rennes in the future?
Rennes is an unexpectedly beautiful and charming city... so go and experience it!
