Erasmus Experience in Rennes, France by Thais
Why did you choose to go to Rennes, France?
Because I knew that it was a student city and the school (ESC Rennes) had a good program.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I applied for the CAF and every month I received like 100€ (it depends on how much you pay for your rent, I paid almost 600€ and the type of visa you have).
What is the student lifestyle like in Rennes?
Really cool! There are a lot of students from different schools/nationalities and there's always a party to go!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Rennes to other students?
Yes!
What is the food like?
There are plenty of restaurants downtown, but you should go to the local ones! You have to try the galette, crepes, and all the bread from the bakeries.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Rennes?
Not much, because the school gave me a list with all the places and the landlord contact.
How much does it cost to live in Rennes?
It depends, if you live alone (private flat) it'll cost you like 1000€ per month, but if you live with flatmates it'll be like 700€.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
For me it was easy and the school offered free French courses depending on your level. It also helps to hang out with french people.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Rennes from your city?
I'm from Mexico, so plane. (Mexico - Paris: plane; Paris - Rennes: train).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Rennes?
Rue de la Soif if you wanna go to a bar, if you like to go clubbing you should go to Delicatessen, la Suite or l'Espace.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Rennes?
Le Cinquecento and Léon le Cochon were my favorites. But if you dont wanna spend so much money on a meal, you should go downtown (Republique/Sainte Anne) and there are plenty of restaurants.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Downtown is really cool, you can go to parc du Thabor, the opera, the parlament and the Cathedral area! But you can also visit:
- Le Mont Saint-Michel,
- Saint-Malo,
- Normandie,
- Nantes...
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Rennes in the future?
Have fun!
