Experience in Paris, France by Matthew
What is it like to live in Paris? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Paris is amazing; such a lively city with so many different people. There is always something to do whether it's visiting tourist sites, museums, traveling to the country side, or just visiting the local bars.
What is the student lifestyle like in Paris?
Paris hosts a large amount of exchange and Erasmus students each semester. There are also several societies and bars that organize student nights with the aim of introducing people to each other.
How much does it cost to live in Paris?
Paris is very expensive, cost of living and rent are extreme. Tobacco and alcohol are cheap as there are little tax on these goods. The main supermarkets like monoprix or franprix can be expensive, so purchasing goods at stores like dia, or even the local markets can be a cheaper option.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Paris? Is there any advice you can give?
If you go through an agency you can find accommodation quickly, but they're expensive. There is plenty of student accommodation but you will have to organize it in advance.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is fantastic! Lots of different cultures and customs across the city so different food is easy to find. My favorite is the falafels which can be found in the Jewish quarter!
What places would you recommend visiting in Paris?
Every single museum, especially the louvre and museum de orsey, Versailles, Luxembourg gardens, arc de triumph, notre damn, pantheon, Eiffel Tower, Paris wheel. There's just too many things to do! A more eclectic choice is to visit the cinemas; Paris has some amazing cinemas. The MK2 are popular, with several locations, and the show movies in multiple languages.
Is it good to eat out in Paris? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes but it can be expensive. Most cafes offer a variety of traditional Parisian cuisines. China town is located in the 13th and they have some amazing food. The Jewish quarter is an excellent choice too!!
Is the nightlife good in Paris? Where is good to go?
Yes, it's excellent. The city runs late into the night, with several boat parties along the senne. Students won't have any issues finding places to go out
What advice would you give future students heading to Paris?
Plan your experience before leaving your home country, try and pick a good location in the city to live, walk every where (Paris is beautiful!!), there are a lot of homeless people so make sure you carry change or food to hand out, practice your French!!!!!
