Experience in Paris, France by Eloise
What is it like to live in Paris? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Paris is a real experience. I come from a town about an hour outside of Toronto and Paris is nothing like any city I've been to. While the prices are very high, the culture and atmosphere is really breathtaking. Every building is stunning and the atmosphere is almost empowering. You're surrounded by history and a strong french culture. I was told french people are very rude, and while they aren't going to go out of their way to be friends with you, I found that if you approach them they are actually quite friendly. Living in Paris really will change your perspective of "city life".
What is the student lifestyle like in Paris?
The student lifestyle in Paris is very very expensive. However there are many opportunities for babysitting and tutoring jobs in your language. The libraries are expensive to use but they have everything you need.
How much does it cost to live in Paris?
Paris is extremely expensive. I was lucky enough to find a nanny live in job so for me it's been affordable but renting an apartment and going to school would be very expensive. Keep in mind there are lots of nanny jobs available!
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Paris? Is there any advice you can give?
Finding an affordable apartment in Paris is extremely difficult. The best advice I can give is to look online for a nanny live in job or finding a student looking for roommates.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is incredible. There are all sorts of variations and cultures of food in Paris and for the most part the restaurants are very good. My favorite foods include pastries and some very creative pasta dishes from Italian restaurants.
What places would you recommend visiting in Paris?
I would recommend visiting the Champs de Mars both at day time and at night. During the day it's really breath taking with the Eiffel tower, it feels almost like you're in a movie. At night it's completely different. It feels like a small public party, there always groups of people listening and dancing to music and the when the Eiffel tower sparkles (every hour) the whole crowd is mesmerized.
Is it good to eat out in Paris? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It's great to eat out in Paris. My favorite spots include a little pastry place is Boulangerie Jumel-Boulangerie Suffren 55, it's affordable and the pastries are amazing. There're lines on the street some times coming out of the shop.
Is the nightlife good in Paris? Where is good to go?
The nightlife in Paris is great. The best way to meet new people and have a good time is through Paris nightlife. It's best to make a local friend to show you the spots in the area you live in as the best places differ depending on your area.
What advice would you give future students heading to Paris?
I would say to enjoy it, really appreciate the beauty of the city. Be confident and look into babysitting jobs as it's very hard to be hired as anything else, and the hours are very flexible.
